A large French funeral services enterprise needed a systematic, data-driven method to identify optimal locations for network expansion, moving beyond intuition to target areas with high demand potential and low existing service density.

Working as a consultant (Nougat.ai), I assisted a major French enterprise in the funeral services sector to optimize their network expansion strategy through data-driven site selection.
Analytical Approach
- Data Aggregation: Combined publicly available geospatial and demographic data (INSEE census data, administrative boundaries) with competitor location data acquired through web scraping and data mining techniques.
- Feature Engineering: Derived key market potential indicators such as density of target age demographics, distance to nearest competitor facilities, and regional accessibility metrics.
- Scoring Model: Developed a custom weighted scoring formula assessing market attractiveness based on demand indicators (e.g., age demographics) and supply indicators (e.g., competitor density).
- Visualization & Delivery: Created an interactive map-based dashboard (using R Shiny or similar tool) to visualize the location scores across France, enabling client stakeholders to easily explore and prioritize potential expansion areas.
This data-driven methodology provided the client with an objective framework for making strategic decisions about network growth.
Solution Overview
Sourced, cleaned, and integrated diverse datasets: geospatial boundaries, census demographics (age structure, population density), and competitor locations (obtained via data mining). Developed a custom scoring algorithm weighting these factors to rank potential sites across France. Visualized the results in an interactive map/dashboard for business users.
